Partial discharge: generator diagnostics and condition monitoring

Understand insulation condition and track changes over time. TEMISA brings technical assessment, measurements and maintenance recommendations into a programme designed around your generator.

A partial discharge programme combines measurements, operating conditions and asset history to inform insulation maintenance decisions. It can start with a diagnostic campaign and continue with periodic measurements or a permanent monitoring project, depending on the asset and plant needs.

Three ways to start

A scope that fits your operation

Start with the objective: assess current condition, follow a trend or develop a permanent system. The proposal defines the activities, resources and deliverables.

01

Diagnostic campaign

You need a baseline or an assessment of a change in behaviour.

We review the history and define suitable measurements during operation or a planned outage. Findings are interpreted alongside equipment condition and test conditions.

Scope deliverable

Measurement report, recorded conditions and recommended next steps.

Request diagnostics
02

Periodic monitoring

You want to compare changes in the same generator over time.

We outline a measurement schedule and trend review. Where sensors or connection points are needed, we assess the instrumentation and installation during an agreed outage.

Scope deliverable

Comparable history, change assessment and proposed maintenance actions.

Plan my programme
03

Continuous monitoring

Your operation needs permanent data collection and remote access.

We develop the project scope: sensors, acquisition, communications, data access and review responsibilities. Integration and support are defined before commissioning.

Scope deliverable

A system, implementation and follow-up proposal with defined scope and terms.

Assess continuous monitoring

One diagnostic approach, different operating priorities

Fit condition monitoring to the production and maintenance cycles of your industry.

A record throughout the generator lifecycle

The first measurement can begin an ongoing programme. The history helps inform further diagnostics, scheduled maintenance and repair or rehabilitation assessments. Each intervention is proposed according to the technical needs of the asset.

  1. 01Identify the asset and review its history
  2. 02Define measurements, instrumentation and access
  3. 03Record results and operating conditions
  4. 04Compare trends and agree the next review

What your proposal defines

  • Generators included and diagnostic objective
  • Measurement mode and compatible sensors
  • Execution and interpretation responsibilities
  • Reports, data and review frequency
  • Site access, conditions and work window
  • Supply, installation, support and exclusions

Questions to help define your scope

Does online measurement mean continuous monitoring?

Not necessarily. Online means measuring while the equipment is operating. This may be a periodic campaign with a portable instrument or a permanently installed system. Continuous monitoring also requires defined acquisition, communications and data review.

Does the generator need an outage?

That depends on the measurement mode and existing instrumentation. Online measurements require suitable measuring points and safe access. Installing sensors may require an outage. Offline testing is scheduled with the equipment out of service.

Can one measurement predict remaining life in years?

Not on its own. Partial discharge provides information about insulation behaviour. Interpretation should consider trends, test conditions, history and other evidence; it is not a remaining-life guarantee.

Can you assess a Megger ICMobserver solution?

We can assess this alternative within the project. Channels, sensors, communications, supply and support are confirmed with the technical participants and supplier. Equipment selection depends on compatibility with the asset and the measurement objective.

Can monitoring be part of my maintenance programme?

Yes. Measurement frequency, results review and follow-up actions can be agreed for each generator. Repairs, spare parts and major interventions are quoted according to the contracted scope.

Does remote access include round-the-clock monitoring and response?

Remote data access and continuous staffed support are different scopes. Review schedules, responsibilities, alerts and response times must be expressly agreed in the service proposal.

Start with your generator information

Share nameplate data, location, number of units, voltage, operating condition and available reports. If sensors are installed, include their model or photographs. This allows us to review the configuration and prepare a scope.

Availability, instruments, specialist participation and schedule are confirmed in the project proposal.
